Nursing, Sri Lanka Anuradhapura

I took many factors into consideration when deciding which elective destination to choose. Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka just happened to tick all the boxes.

Work the World were great. We got regular support via the phone and email, which allowed the elective planning process to run very smoothly.

Their team in the UK even helped me ensure the appropriate documentation was completed on time. MyTrip (Work the World’s online placement planner) was very helpful with this. All I had to do was login to my personalised planner and see what I needed to complete.

My Placement

Healthcare is free in both England and Sri Lanka, but the differences couldn’t be more apparent.

The lack of privacy and confidentiality offered to patients was a shock at first.

However, as my placement developed, I learned to appreciate just how much staff were able to achieve with what little they had.

As with any healthcare professionals, they had their patients’ interests at the heart of everything they did.

Travel opportunities

We all looked forward to weekend trips. Sri Lanka had many heritage sites to visit, some of which we visited after placement. We visited the destinations that were further away at the weekends.

Jamil, FaizahWe spent one weekend in Trincomalee near a beach where I went snorkelling.

On another weekend, we visited three cities in four days. We went shopping, did the famous 7-hour train ride from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy, and (my favourite) the World’s End climb.

Living in a house with people from all over the world, I made friends quickly. I always spent my weekends with people from the house as everyone tended to want to see and do the same things. This was really helpful when booking trips as it helped keep the costs down.

I had an amazing experience with Work the World, and couldn’t recommend them more.
