Philippines

I was able to take an overseas elective as encouraged by my university. I knew people in older years who had thoroughly enjoyed theirs. I decided to go to Iloilo in the Philippines for my two-week elective placement.

The hospital was very busy, and the infection control procedures were not what I was used to in the UK. Patients are responsible for purchasing some equipment used in dental procedures, which I didn't expect.

I was able to see some interesting maxillofacial cases, including facial trauma and oral cancer. I discussed orthodontic treatment cases with residents and joined in on their journal article discussions.

I saw a patient who had developed a brain abscess from a long-standing tooth infection. This was very memorable, as cases are often not presented this late in the UK. I was also able to observe facial trauma repairs in maxillofacial surgery with zygomatic and orbital rim fractures.

I was surprised to see that local anaesthetic was rarely used, even in cases of root canal treatment. Root canal treatments were also performed without the use of a rubber dam.

There is no appointment system in the dental hospital, meaning patients will turn up on a certain day, not knowing what time they will be seen. This can make the waiting rooms and corridors very hectic.

As I was only there for two weeks, I only had one weekend to explore more of the Philippines. My housemates and I went on a 4-hour coach journey to go canyon swinging and river rafting. It was incredible.

In the evenings after placement, we enjoyed a mix of activities, including sightseeing at the monkey temple, going out for food and drinks, and relaxing at home.

This trip has allowed me to visit a country very different from my own and experience a very different healthcare system.

Work the World will arrange everything for you, making it a stress-free and safe choice for an overseas dental elective!

"I was able to see some oral cancers at the OMF clinic which was useful as I had been taught what they might look like but I had never seen any cases in real life."

"A lot of the time we were working with no x-rays. This meant a lot of procedures, such as extractions for example were kind of performed blind."
