Frequently asked questions
Are your programmes open?
Yes! We are delighted to confirm we are open. Get in touch with us for further information.
You’ll find peace of mind in the knowledge that our well-established safety measures will protect you, whichever destination you travel to.
You can have full confidence in these new safety measures knowing that we rolled them out and perfected them during the controlled reopening of our Ghana programme in 2021. It was an overwhelming success. As of 2022, these measures are being rolled out across all of our destinations as they reopen ready for you to start your once-in-a-lifetime overseas placement.
We set the standard for overseas healthcare placements and internships. We’re able to do this because, unlike other providers, we offer healthcare placements only. That means we can put all our energy and expertise into focusing on what makes the perfect placement for healthcare students and graduates like you. Your whole experience, including the safety aspects of the placement, are specifically designed with that in mind.
We are accepting registrations for all programmes for travel in 2022 and beyond. Demand is high and capacities are limited so get in touch using the Enquiry Form on the website and one of our team will be in touch.
Are there changes to the way your overseas programmes operate?
Now our programmes are open, we are following enhanced procedures to minimise the risks of Covid transmission.
Our locally-hired, highly trained teams on the ground maintain strong and constant communication with our Head Office. This allows us to have first-hand information and insight in real time. We never work with external contractors, but also because hiring our own staff means that we can instantly make changes to the way we operate should the need arise.
Your Operations Manager, who works directly with our overseas teams and who knows the country and the hospital you’ll be placed in inside and out will contact you well in advance of your departure to go through all of these measures for your arrival.
Once you’ve arrived in-country you will also receive an in-depth induction from our overseas teams to reiterate all measures we have in place.
You will not be staying in a homestay. You can also feel safe knowing that you’ll live in our privately run, exclusive accommodation, accessible only to you, your housemates and our in-country team. Each Work the World House now operates with established Covid safety measures
Your personal online placement planner (MyTrip) will have all the latest information on all measures relevant to the country you’re travelling to.
We have incredibly strong relationships with our partner hospitals and the local authorities in all locations. You will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) within all healthcare settings.
Whichever Work the World programme you decide to travel to, our enhanced procedures will be in place. And, as with every other aspect of our service, these protocols will be tailored to the specific needs of each destination.
If you would like further information please contact our team using the Enquiry Form.
What precautions will there be in your partner hospitals?
We have long-standing relationships with all our partner hospitals and we’ve been liaising closely with them, as well as local health authorities, regarding any changes implemented in the hospitals where our placements are undertaken.
Every country differs slightly in their approach and there will be a continual assessment of all aspects of placement delivery, ensuring we adapt, advance and update you on what may be required at your time of travel.
Covid testing is available in all programme locations in which we operate.
This includes local government hospitals as well as private medical facilities. Our dedicated supervisors working with you on placement will be following all hospital transmission-prevention protocols.
You will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) within all healthcare settings.
Can I go once I’ve finished at university?
Yes, our healthcare placements abroad are for both students and professionals. Every element of your experience is tailor-made depending on your level of experience. Get in touch with us and we can talk you through our internships for professionals.
Will I still be able to travel at weekends/when I am not on placement?
Yes.
One of the biggest benefits of choosing to go away with us is our in-country teams. All team members have access to a wide range of tourist services, so will have first-hand information and insight on travel within the country you decide to travel to.
DO I NEED TO BE VACCINATED?
Yes. We only accept people who have been fully vaccinated against Covid onto our programmes.
The first thing you should note is that we only accept healthcare students or graduates onto our programmes. This means that you will live with and spend time alongside people who already have an excellent understanding of what Covid safety looks like.
All our in-country teams are vaccinated in line with each local ministry of health’s vaccination rules and the vaccination rollout in the destination. All staff who travel to our programmes from our UK Head Office will also be fully vaccinated.
Access to Covid vaccines in some developing countries is still incredibly limited, so it is possible many patients will not yet have been vaccinated. With that in mind, mitigating the transmission to patients and local hospital staff is another reason why we only accept people who have been fully vaccinated.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET COVID WHILST I'M AWAY?
Covid testing is available in all programme locations in which we operate.
To give you an extra layer of safety, if you test positive during the duration of your placement, you will be accommodated separately away from the Work the World house. Your personal online placement planner (MyTrip) will have all the latest information on all measures relevant for the country you’re travelling to.
If you have to complete a certain number of hospital placement hours, we’ll work with you and our hospital partners (placement duration remaining permitting) to ensure there is an opportunity for you to make up for any lost hours.
You will have 24/7 support and communication from our on-the-ground team during any period of isolation.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY DESTINATION REQUIRES ME TO QUARANTINE ON ARRIVAL?
We understand that isolation upon arrival is not realistic when undertaking a short overseas placement. For this reason, we will not be opening any programmes that require you to isolate upon arrival.
Should the country you are travelling to introduce new quarantine restrictions close to your departure, we will be in touch with you immediately to discuss your placement. You will be able to make free of charge changes to your departure date or you can swap your booking to another Work the World programme - again with no administrative fees. We have made this easy to do, and you’ll get exactly the same high-quality Work the World experience.
Will my travel insurance cover me if I have to cancel my placement?
If you were unable to travel, depending on the notice period given for cancellation you may be due a refund from Work the World. The cancellation and refund policy is set out in section 6.3 of the Terms and Conditions.
Depending on the reason for cancelling, your travel insurance may well cover you for any costs you can’t recover from Work the World. We recommend that you arrange travel insurance for your trip as soon as you book, in order to make sure that you have cover in place for the period before you travel as well as when you are overseas.
If you do need to make a claim through your insurers, we will help by providing all supporting documentation necessary.
What happens if I book and I then cannot go?
We want to give you total peace of mind when booking your overseas placement. We understand that future travel plans may need to change, and in these unprecedented times we know how important it is for you to have flexibility. With this in mind, we are offering you more flexibility than ever before.
We have now relaxed our Terms and Conditions, meaning you can now make as many changes to your booking as you like should you need to. Whether you need to change your travel dates or your chosen destination, you can do so easily and we have waived all amendment costs.
If you would like further information please contact our team using the Enquiry Form.
“REIZEN NA ZO LANG IN LOCKDOWN TE HEBBEN GEZETEN, WAS BEVRIJDEND.
...COVID-19 zal er nog wel een tijdje zijn en we zullen er gewoon aan moeten wennen. Ik had geen idee dat door twee weken in een Ghanees ziekenhuis door te brengen, mijn zelfvertrouwen niet alleen als verloskundige, maar ook als persoon zo zou groeien. Ik heb nu echt het gevoel dat ik alles kan."
