Beautiful buildings, tasty food, welcoming communities and a history that taught me so much are just some of the things that made Cambodia so incredible.
My nursing elective took place within a hospital situated in the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh.
I chose Cambodia because I wanted to see how a country with limited resources provided quality care to those in need.
Throughout my two-week placement I spent one week within the emergency department and one week in the malnutrition department.
Not only have I learnt so much about alternative health care services, but I have also gained skills and memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Starting my elective in the ED before moving to the malnutrition ward allowed me to see the full healthcare process patients go through. It was lovely to see some of the patients get better and return home.
Learning about Cambodia’s culture and making an effort with their language allowed me to build great relationships with the staff, patients and families.
The team at the Work the World house were incredible. They gave us such a warm welcome when we returned home from placement and were there 24 hours a day to check we were okay – they made us feel like family.
We spent our evenings exploring Phnom Penh or at the house for BBQ nights with music and karaoke or watching movies.
I have made memories and learnt things that I will carry with me always.
This trip has been the most life-changing experience and it has taught me so much. I have made memories and learnt things that I will carry with me always. I am forever grateful for everyone that has been a part of this incredible journey.
