Medical, Nepal Kathmandu

I wanted to gain first-hand experience of the healthcare system in Nepal and develop a deeper understanding of the differences in clinical practice compared to my own country. I felt it was an incredible opportunity to observe podiatry/orthopedics within a completely different cultural and healthcare setting, allowing me to broaden both my professional knowledge and personal perspective.

My first impressions of the hospital were quite daunting, especially as podiatry does not exist in Nepal and I was placed within the orthopedics department. While I had a strong knowledge of the lower-limb, the upper-limb was an unfamiliar area for me. However, my supervisor was very supportive and taught me new skills, which helped build my confidence and knowledge.

I learnt a variety of new clinical skills throughout the placement, including performing clinical tests and interpreting diagnostic imaging. I also had the opportunity to witness surgery for the first time and observe a range of different orthopedic procedures.

The most memorable case I witnessed involved a young patient who had been involved in a road traffic collision and sustained an oblique displaced fracture of the femoral shaft. The injury had also ruptured the femoral arteries, resulting in severe internal bleeding, making it a life-threatening situation. The patient required an emergency ORIF of the femoral shaft, which was incredible to witness.

Although there were some differences in communication and patient confidentiality compared with what I am used to, the consultants were extremely efficient with their work and patient care.

Outside placement, my housemates and I took part in lots of fun activities, including pottery, cooking, and jewellery classes, as well as going for massages and drinks together. It was amazing to spend time with such lovely people and we created many memories together throughout the placement.

This placement has truly opened my eyes to the world of surgery and has inspired me to pursue podiatric surgery later in my career. Observing a variety of procedures and working within the orthopedics department strengthened my interest in surgical practice and motivated me to continue developing my clinical knowledge and skills.

Go in with an open mind, ready to learn and see everything / anything.
