Nursing, Cambodia Phnom Penh

Hardisty, AliceI chose Cambodia due to its diverse culture and how different the healthcare system is. I wanted to go and learn more about how their healthcare system works, as well as learn from the healthcare professionals there.

Throughout my placement, I was able to spend a lot of time with one of the nurses who spoke very good English. During my time at the hospital I assisted with mixing IV antibiotics, attended ward rounds with the consultants and doctors, assisted with wound dressings, watched procedures and gave out patients’ medication.

There were vast differences in healthcare provisions between the UK and Cambodia, for example, a patient’s personal care was provided by the patient’s family, medication had to be bought from the pharmacy by the family before use. Families provided food, blankets and pillows for the patient and the healthcare professionals only provided the medical-based care.

Hardisty, AliceI also found that the doctors and nurses would reuse equipment and there was limited handwashing on ICU, so the risk of infection was high.

Once I’d settled in, Cambodia was an amazing country to be in. At the weekends myself and some people I met in the Work the World house went on trips to Siem Reap to explore the temples, and other significant places of interested.

it’s a beautiful country and I will never forget it.

Cambodia was an amazing experience and I would do it all over again if I could. It’s busy and extremely hot, but it’s a beautiful country and I will never forget it.

Hardisty, AliceOne moment I will never forget was when a mother was told her son wouldn’t come out of his coma, and she could not stop sobbing. As she was standing right next to me, I put my arm around her and hugged her. She couldn’t thank me enough for trying to help her son. It made me very emotional and it is something I will never forget.

The advice I would give to other students is cram as much into your time as you can and wear lots of suncream!
