Hull York Medical School (HYMS) 2025

Medical, Tanzania Dar es Salaam

I undertook a placement overseas to gain experience in a different healthcare system.

I wanted to learn more about conditions prevalent in Tanzania but not in the UK, and their management. Also, to experience a different culture and observe its impact on medical practice.

Work the World helps massively with organising the placement abroad. Introducing you to the ward team at the start of each rotation, we made a big difference.

The staff were also super helpful with advice on placement, trips outside of placement, and generally making us feel comfortable.

The house was very comfortable and felt very safe. There was a pool with plenty of space to sunbathe, and the staff were really welcoming.

Our meals were provided, which was very helpful, and there were always dietary options for everyone. It was also well located with lots of places for food and drinks nearby, and there were plenty of shops.

Living with other healthcare students was great. I met so many lovely people, and it was interesting to hear about everyone’s different experiences on placement. Also, living with lots of people meant there were always trips going on that we could join.

When it came to the placement itself, the team introduced us and gave us a tour at the start of each rotation. They were great when we came to organise trips and excursions — they had great advice, like attending a local football match and going hiking.

The chefs’ food was always delicious and they made sure to cater for everyone. The security team were super friendly and made us feel safe. The housekeepers kept the house super clean and were so friendly and welcoming.

The main differences included the different conditions seen in Tanzania compared to the UK, like Malaria, higher rates of  HIV and TB and their complications, etc.

Another big difference is the cost of healthcare for patients, with many having to pay out of pocket, leaving many struggling to afford the care they need.

On weekends, we were always busy with trips, safaris, Zanzibar, island trips, etc., all of which were amazing.

In the evenings, there was always something going on, from cultural experiences like city bike tours to karaoke nights on Wednesdays.

Safari was also an incredible experience! Seeing a Leopard will always be a fantastic memory.
