I was inspired to undertake an overseas placement as I wanted to gain a different perspective on healthcare, specifically in a developing nation, having grown up and trained in New Zealand. I liked the idea of Tanzania being an adventure with amazing nature, and a number of health conditions and challenges not seen in New Zealand.

Work the World made life so much easier. Travelling to Tanzania was quite draining, so having help organise all the admin and knowing that when I arrive, they have a team always here to help made a huge difference.

The Work the World house is super sociable, with activities always going on. Everyone is there to support you and is always great entertainment with a mix of cultures and accents. In Tanzania, it is a large house with rooms and bunk beds, a great living area and the best part - the pool outside.

Living with other healthcare students, I have laughed every day here. Everyone is keen to explore when not at the hospital. So it is very easy to organise trips either after the hospital or on the weekend. I have made great friendships while here.

The in-country team here in Tanzania are amazing. From the hospital at the start of each placement and ensuring everything is going well, to the chefs, cleaning, and ground staff, have made my time unbelievable. Every day we have a laugh, and everyone is super friendly.

I have spent my time largely in the emergency department here. Differences include a lack of resources and the challenges associated with this, e.g., 2 vital signs machines for 6 very sick patients. There are also more communicable diseases not seen in New Zealand, for example, HIV/AIDs, tuberculosis, malaria, etc.

We have packed our stay with a lot of activities in the evenings and weekends outside of placement. Some highlights include climbing Ol Dongai Lengai Volcano, walking with giraffes, zebras at the lake and our Masaai experience. We’ve explored Zanzibar, played football with locals on the beach and gone for bike tours around the local Dar es Salaam area. 

One thing about my experience that will stay in my mind forever is climbing OI Doinyo Lengai, walking with giraffes on my birthday - it was unreal.
