The Chinese University of Hong Kong 2015
Whilst researching overseas electives, I came across Work the World on the Internet. I found out that they are based in the UK and are well known for organising different types of electives in various specialties. I felt this was exactly what I needed. The moment I decided to travel on my own, my parents became really worried. However, the fact I was travelling with Work the World was reassuring for them. Work the World further assured them by calling a few times prior to my departure, ensuring I had all the information needed and had made all the necessary preparations before leaving the country. What’s more, their website was well developed and allowed us to view information about my trip.
I arrived late at night. Uma picked me up at the airport just like Work the World (WTW) staff said she would. The next day, Uma took us out for our city orientation. She also helped us to get a local SIM card and exchange the money we needed. The following day, we were escorted to our placement hospital and were introduced to our supervisors. This was really helpful and saved us from lots of trouble in respect to finding locations.
From the commencement of my hospital placement till the very end of my trip, these four weeks have been an eye-opening experience for me. I finally got to see how the medical systems work here in a resource-deprived country. In comparison to Hong Kong, people in Nepal are very humble and tolerant towards medical staff.
I HAVE LEARNED QUITE A LOT IN THE PAST FOUR WEEKS IN TERMS OF DIFFERENT CASES i expereinced IN the EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT including BURN AND POISONING CASES. they were MAINLY ACCIDENTAL but occured in a greater number compared to china. "
Between my hospital days, I managed to squeeze in some travelling time, We had organised activities every weekend. During the weekends, we went rafting, visited Chitwan safari and explored Kathmandu. From different temple visits and city tours, my travelling time overseas was packed and fruitful.
If you decide to travel to Nepal, make sure you visit Chitwan National park and Bhaktapur. Oh and also, be sure to visit the Monkey temple for its amazing view.
