I chose Work the World for my elective because I was travelling on my own. I wanted to live in a house full of other students with similar lures of healthcare and travelling. I’ve made amazing friends and been on great adventures that I’d only experience with Work the World.
One of the most interesting cases and presentations I saw on my placement was when I witnessed and treated a woman with eclampsia. In the UK there is only a tiny chance of developing this condition and pre-eclampsia is very well monitored and controlled.
I was also able to compare normal birth and caesareans with what I’ve seen in the UK and I was able to participate.
I have become more self–confident in my ability to communicate with patients (especially in Spanish) and in being independent.
During my free time I travelled to Huacachina, Colca Canyon, and went rock climbing. I always wanted to do Machu Picchu and managed to tick it off my bucket list as well!
I would definitely recommend Work the World to a friend and if they’re travelling alone specially. The staff are incredibly helpful and go out of their way for all members of the house.
